Почнемо з того, що в англійській мові артикль вживається з іменниками або у словосполученнях, що містять іменник:
A girl
A beautiful girl
An interesting story
The day before yesterday
The best person in the world
Існує два види артиклів – неозначений (a/an) та означений (the). Також є такі комбінації, в яких артикль не використовується. Така ситуація має назву «Нульовий артикль».
Неозначений артикль «a/an»
A/An — The Indefinite article
- A/An використовуємо лише зі злічуваними іменниками в однині. “A” перед приголосним звуком, “an” перед голосним. Зверніть увагу на те, що в англійській мові звук “h” у деяких словах не вимовляється на початку слова, тоді використовуємо артикль “an”:
an email
a table
a pencil
a lovely day
a factory
an interesting story
a wild animal
an hour
2. Артикль a/an вживається із професіями:
a doctor
a nurse
an engineer
an electrician
3. Неозначений артикль a/an ставимо перед предметами та особами, про які мова йде вперше, тобто вони невідомі:
Is there a cat under the bed?
I see a little boy outside.
4. A/An використовується для опису людини, її характеристик та якостей, що є іменниками:
Peter is a fool.
She is a real professional in this area.
5. Існують сталі вирази, які я рекомендую просто вивчити напам’ять:

Означений артикль «the»
The — The Definite article
- Використовуємо артикль «the», коли мова йде про вже згадану річ або особу. Тобто, перший раз про неї говоримо із «a/an», а вдруге, втретє і надалі із «the»:
I saw a nice T-shirt in the store. The T-shirt was read and white. I guess you’ll like the T-shirt I’m talking about.
2. Також «the» використовують, якщо мають на увазі конкретні, зрозумілі та очевидні речі. Іншими словами, їх не сплутаєш із іншими, адже є лише один варіант того, про що йдеться:
Leave the book over there.
Close the window please.
3. Артикль «the» ставиться із найвищим ступенем порівняння прикметників (Superlative Form):
big — bigger — the biggest
beautiful — more beautiful — the most beautiful
bad — worse — the worst
4. … з порядковими числівниками (Ordinal Numerals):
the first
the second
the third
the tenth
the sixth
5. … з назвами музичних інструментів:
I can play the piano.
He has never tried to play the guitar.
6. … з предметами та особами, що є унікальними у своїй кількості:
the Sun
the Moon
the Earth (Але назви інших планет без артикля:Mars, Jupiter, Neptun)
the Pope
the Queen
the President
7. … з назвами водних об’єктів (заток, течій, річок, морів, океанів). Назви поодиноких озер без артикля:
the Amazon
the Panama Channel
the Gulf of Mexico
the North Sea
the Pacific Ocean
(Lake) Baikal
8. … з назвами групи островів та гірськими хребтами. Поодинокі назви гір та островів пишемо без артиклів:
the Alps
the Bahamas

9. … з назвами країн, що містять у назві слова “union”, “republic”, “republic”, “federation”, “kingdom”, а також декілька країн, які треба запам’ятати:
the United States (Але America)

10. … з назвами готелів, кінотеатрів, театрів, музеїв та визначних споруд:

12. … з назвами деяких організацій:

Нульвой артикль. Вживання іменників без артикля
Zero article. No article
- Не використовуємо артиклі з власними назвами, крім тих, які наведені у пунктах 6-12 вживання артикля «the»:
My name is Bond, James Bond.
Sirius Black is a fictional character in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series.
2. Назви міст, столиць, країн, континентів без артиклів, крім пункта 9 вживання артикля «the» та столиці The Hague:
We live in Ukraine.
She is going to relocate to New York City.
3. Не вживаємо артиклі з назвами вулиць, крім деяких головних, площ, парків, мостів:
London is known for Tower Bridge, Hyde Park, Trafalgar Square, Oxford Street and other attractions.
4. … з прийомами їжі:
to have breakfast
to make lunch
to eat dinner
to get supper
5. … з назвами понять, явищ:
I feel love and happiness.
I don’t need your attention.
